Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch Gilbert, AZ
The Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch is one of my favorite hidden gems in Gilbert, Arizona! Located on Guadalupe Road, just east of Greenfield Road, it’s the perfect spot to soak up nature, enjoy family time, or snap some gorgeous photos. Established in 1999, this preserve protects local wildlife and helps manage the town’s water resources. Plus, there’s something fun for everyone—from educational programs to stargazing!
Why I Love It Here
I adore photographing families at the Riparian Preserve, especially in spring! The serene water, towering trees, and bursts of wildflowers create dreamy backdrops. It’s the perfect place to capture memories.
Things to See and Do
- Hike the Trails: Explore 4.5 miles of scenic paths that wind through different habitats—from desert vegetation to lush wetlands.
- Dig for Fossils: The paleontology dig site is a hit with the kids (and pretty fun for adults too!).
- Butterfly Garden: A peaceful little nook where you’ll find vibrant flowers and fluttering butterflies.
- Fishing: Cast a line at Lake 7, stocked by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
- Dog-Friendly: Bring your pup! Just be sure to keep them on a leash.
Wildlife Galore
The preserve is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with around 298 species of birds. From majestic herons to colorful hummingbirds, you’ll want to keep your camera ready. Plus, you’ll spot rabbits, lizards, and some cool insects—so don’t forget the bug spray!
Stargazing at the Observatory
The Gilbert Rotary Centennial Observatory (GRCO) is one of my favorite spots! You can peek through their powerful telescope during public viewing nights. It’s a magical way to see the stars and learn about the universe.
