When to take maternity photos

Maternity photography is a beautiful way to capture the anticipation and excitement of waiting for your new baby. But, with all the planning and preparation that goes into welcoming a new member into the family, figuring out the best time to schedule a maternity photoshoot can be a bit of a puzzle. This article is here to guide you through finding the perfect timing for your maternity photos, making sure you have those precious moments captured beautifully.

Pregnancy is a journey full of changes, both physical and emotional. Each trimester has its unique pros and cons, and understanding these can help you decide when to capture this special time.

What’s the best time to take pregnancy photos?

The ideal time for a maternity photoshoot is generally between 28 and 36 weeks, with the best time being at 32 weeks! This timeframe allows for a visibly pronounced belly but still falls before the discomfort of the final weeks sets in. Trust me, having photos done after 36 weeks is tough, and I do not recommend it.

Can you take photos earlier than 28 weeks? Yes! Your belly will be less noticeable, but early pregnancy photos can be done to capture your pregnancy announcement and gender reveal. Mid-pregnancy would be a great time to take photos too, as long as your belly is showing!

When is the best time to take maternity photos with twins or multiples?

Because twins, or more babies, tend to be a little less roomy for your babies (which makes your belly bigger, and faster) I recommend taking photos as early as the belly is popping. For twins, this would be around 22 to 28 weeks!

How do I plan a maternity photoshoot?

First, find someone whose style you love and who you feel comfortable with. Next, you’ll have to decide on the location. If you pick a photographer who does photos indoors, then you’ll just ask them for their studio address. If you picked a photographer who does portraits outdoors, then you’ll have to ask them for suggestions based on the scenery you’re dreaming about (desert, lake, beach, etc). Lastly, you’ll want to get on Pinterest and create a board! Add in outfits that feel comfortable and highlight your belly beautifully. This could be a long flowy dress or fabrics. The best dresses I found are the ones made of chiffon or silk!

Should I bring my husband or my other kids to my maternity session?

Yes! Including your partner or other children can add a lovely, personal touch to your photos. Plus they are part of the family and when the baby is older, they’d love to see these amazing photos of everyone together celebrating their arrival. Have pets? Bring your dog, cat, even your snake! This would make an amazing and unique photo shoot that you won’t regret.

DISCLAIMER: Prioritize your comfort and safety, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. If a photographer is asking you to do a pose or anything that hurts or is not what you want to do, be vocal about it and tell them how you feel! Safety is always number 1!
