How To Prepare For Your ERAS Photos
Getting well-prepared for your photo session will help you achieve the best results! Here are some of my best tips for getting the best photos
- Wear SPF 50 a week before your photo shoot, every day before going outside. We want to avoid sunburns right before your big day.
- Stay hydrated, drink 8 glasses of water the day before your session, and continue to stay hydrated during your session. This helps hydrate your skin and reduces dark under the eyes. click here for my favorite electrolytes.
- Sleep well the night before. I recommend 8 hours.
- Pack your outfit bag the night before with all of your outfits. If they need to be steam-ironed, do that the night before and leave them on the hanger by the front door.
- Don’t ignore your scalp. If you need to do a root touchup, schedule that a few days before. I recommend 5 days before and WITH A PROFESSIONAL. You don’t want a stained forehead on the day of your session.
- Moisyrize your face before bed.
- DO NOT spray tan, try new products on your body or face, or do any chemical facials, or waxing/laser right before your session. Waxing eyebrows is ok just remember you can stay irritated for a few days.
Best Time to Take Your Photo
Take your photo well in advance of the mid-October application reviews. This ensures you have ample time for retakes or adjustments.
Choosing the Right Background
While a white or light gray background is standard, some candidates opt for a darker background to make their faces pop. However, always use a plain studio backdrop for a professional look.
Dressing for Success (What To Wear For Your ERAS Photo)
Wear professional attire:
- Men: Navy or charcoal suit with a tie. Avoid patterns.
- Women: Conservative clothing with minimal jewelry. Avoid low-cut tops.
- Both: No white coats in the primary photo. Wear a rich color that stands out.
- Wear glasses if you normally wear them all the time.

The Importance of Retouching
Professional retouching can enhance your photo by smoothing out imperfections. Some retouching you can request is smoothing out skin, lighter under eyes, smooth wrinkles, teeth whitening, hair flyways, pimples, and color correct for the skin. Avoid heavy filters and aim for natural-looking enhancements! Luckily, we offer this type of magazine retouching with all of our photos.
